What to Do Between Two Ring Sizes
It’s extremely common for a measurement to fall between two standard sizes rather than landing exactly on one — sizing systems move in fixed steps, but fingers don’t. When that happens, which size should you choose?
Consider the band width first
As covered in our piece on band width, a wider band fits more snugly than a thin one at the same nominal size. If you’re between sizes and the ring has a wide band (roughly 6mm+), lean toward the larger size. For a thin band, either can work, but the smaller size is often more secure against slipping off.
Consider how and when you measured
If you measured when your hands were cold or first thing in the morning, your finger may run slightly larger later in the day — in that case, leaning toward the larger size gives more day-to-day comfort. If you measured after activity or in heat, the opposite may apply. See our piece on daily size changes for more on this.
Consider what the ring is for
A ring worn daily needs to go on and off comfortably over time (finger size can shift slightly with age, weight changes, or temperature), which favors slightly looser. A ring for occasional wear can afford to sit more snugly.
When in doubt, ask the retailer
Our ring size calculator always shows both nearest sizes when you’re in between, specifically so you can weigh these factors yourself — but the retailer or jeweler you’re buying from will know their own sizing tolerances and resizing policy best, so it’s always worth asking them directly for anything you’re not buying with a trusted return/resize option.
