Finding a Ring Size Without Asking
Buying a ring as a surprise means you can’t just ask “what’s your ring size?” without giving the whole thing away. Here are a few practical, low-risk ways to figure it out anyway.
Borrow a ring they already wear
If they wear any ring on the same finger (or a similar-sized finger), borrow it briefly — even overnight — and measure its inside diameter with a ruler, or trace its inner circle on paper. Enter that measurement into our ring size calculator in “I have a ring that fits” mode to get the equivalent size. Return the ring before they notice it’s missing.
Ask a friend or family member to help
A close friend or relative can often ask casually (“hey, I need to borrow a ring for something, what size are you?”) without raising suspicion, or can help you borrow a ring discreetly.
Use an educated estimate as a fallback
If neither option works, many retailers offer free resizing within a return window — check this before you buy. As a rough starting point, our ring size chart shows the most common sizes across US/UK/EU/Japan, though guessing should be a last resort given how much fit varies person to person.
After the surprise
Once the surprise is over, get an accurate measurement using our measuring guide and use the retailer’s resizing policy if needed — most engagement rings are resized at least once, and that’s completely normal.
